What is the Youngstown Radio Reading Service?

Operating over the SCA (sideband) of WYSU-FM, the Youngstown Radio Reading Service (YRRS) is a private, non-profit station serving the print impaired.  The YRRS broadcasts print materials which are not otherwise accessible to its listeners.  Programming includes in-depth coverage of local newspapers along with readings from magazines, and best-selling books presented in series.  Talk shows and special interest programs encourage listeners to share experiences, exchange views, and gain knowledge.  Specially tuned radios are provided free of charge to qualified listeners.  These services are provided in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula Counties, as well as areas of western Pennsylvania.  Operations are funded through the eTech Ohio  Commission, the United Ways of both Mahoning and Trumbull Counties, Lions Clubs, underwriting of programs by businesses and individuals, private donations and Goodwill's operation.

Who are the Print Impaired?

The vast majority of the YRRS audience is visually impaired.  Other people who qualify include those with physical impairments, such as stroke or multiple sclerosis.  The final category of eligibility is learning disabilities, such as dyslexia.

How does it work?

More than 120 volunteers make it possible for the YRRS to broadcast 12 hours a day, every day of the year.  They are mainly responsible for reading the various materials for broadcast, but are also involved in many other functions which are crucial to the station’s operations.  These can include distribution of receivers, transportation, and coordinating and training new volunteers.  If you would like to help, please call YRRS at 330.759.0100.
