Goodwill Looking for More Janitorial Contracts Does your office space need cleaning? Are you looking for someone to handle the janitorial duties at you business? Goodwill can help.
Many people don’t realize, but Goodwill provides janitorial services to outside companies. With more businesses in the area closing, or moving out of the Mahoning Valley, Goodwill has lost several of the industrial contract jobs that were once a major source of revenue. As a result, Goodwill has turned to its janitorial division to help recover the revenue that was lost. In addition to the loss of many of Goodwill’s industrial contract jobs, Goodwill is now facing the possibility of losing its largest janitorial contract. With the uncertainty of the future of Forum Health’s Beeghly Medical Park facility, which Goodwill is currently contracted to clean through the end of December, it is even more important for Goodwill to take on new janitorial jobs. Along with the loss of this contract comes the loss of 12 janitorial positions for Goodwill employees. “We are losing good value with Forum,” states Al Slabe, Goodwill’s operations director. “We’ve invested a lot of time there and have some very good employees there. It’s kind of a shame.” On the positive side, Goodwill has recently picked up several new janitorial contracts. They recently began providing janitorial services for a local veterinarian’s office and a newly opened business college in the area, but there is still a need for more work. Goodwill began its janitorial services program in 1986, when they were contracted to clean the roadside rest stops. As Goodwill saw growth in that area and was offered more janitorial contracts, a training program was implemented at Goodwill’s main facility. Once going through the evaluation program, those interested in Goodwill’s janitorial training program begin working with a supervisor in Goodwill’s own janitorial department. The program entails in-house training for up to six months and classes in safety procedures and safe chemical usage. Once the individual completes the training program, the goal is to hopefully place them in a janitorial job in the community or place them in a janitorial position in one of Goodwill’s contract jobs.
In order for an individual to be hired onto one of Goodwill’s janitorial crews, they must pass a background check and drug test. Goodwill’s janitorial crews currently work in areas such as hospital recovery/operating rooms, industrial plants, general office buildings, government agencies, schools, daycares, doctor’s offices and high security settings such as the Airbase. Goodwill’s janitorial crews are skilled in general cleaning, rug and hard floor maintenance, and stripping and waxing. They currently clean over one million square feet locally. Not only do those who use Goodwill’s janitorial services receive good value for their money, but they also help the community by supporting Goodwill and providing jobs for people with disabilities and other barriers to employment. Approximately 46 people are employed in janitorial services with Goodwill.
Goodwill can provide janitorial services to businesses in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Lawrence and Mercer counties. If you have any questions regarding Goodwill’s janitorial services, or are looking for someone to clean your building, contact Al Slabe at 330.759.7921, ext. 219. [ return to home page ] |
