Bad Weather, Economy Doesn’t Stop Auction Patrons Despite a struggling economy and bad weather, the Junior Group of Goodwill’s annual Antique and Collectible Auction was still a success. Even with the snow piled up outside, people came out to help raise over $58,000 in support of Goodwill’s mission. The two-day event at Stambaugh Auditorium kicked off on February 1 with the Friday evening gala. Nearly 500 people attended the event. Patrons were able to enjoy hors d’ oeuvres and pastries while taking part in the basket raffle, 50/50 raffle, silent auction, jewelry sale, Chinese auction and a live auction of new items donated by area businesses.
Items were available in the live auction that appealed to a wide audience with 85 items up for bid. Some of the items that brought in the highest bids were a gourmet dinner prepared in your home, limo service, airline tickets, Ohio State football tickets, Cleveland Indians and Cavs tickets, house and window pressure washing, a Nanette Lepore designed jacket, a C.C. Sabathia autographed baseball and a Nintendo Wii. For those not interested in bidding, several thousand pieces of pre-priced jewelry were available to purchase in the ever popular jewelry section of the gala. The all-day Saturday auction featured antiques and collectibles that were donated throughout the year at the nine area Goodwill donation centers in Austintown, Boardman, Liberty, Calcutta, Struthers, Salem, Warren, Hermitage and New Castle. Items such as paintings, musical instruments, vintage jewelry, furniture, toys and glassware were just some of the items that the 261 people in attendance had a chance to bid on. One of the more unique pieces this year, which garnered the highest bid, was a diver’s helmet.
Proceeds from the auction are used to help meet Goodwill’s operational and capital needs. These funds come to Goodwill at a critical time as store sales and donations have suffered due to the harsh winter weather and struggling economy. Sponsors for this year’s auction were Aim NationaLease, Home Savings and Loan, Allied Wasted Services and Hill, Barth and King. Don’t miss out on all the fun and excitement next year. The 2009 auction will be held on Friday, February 6 and Saturday, February 7 at Stambaugh Auditorium.
