Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries recently received a $72,063 renewal grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant will allow Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries to continue to provide vocational services to the homeless. Goodwill is part of a Mahoning County Continuum of Care that provides homeless assistance in a joint effort to end homelessness and assists individuals to become stabilized and more self-sufficient.

In 2007, Goodwill served 18 homeless individuals, an increase of 72% from the previous year. Half of those served were placed in jobs such as janitorial, housekeeping, prep cook and factory work.

Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries employs and provides vocational rehabilitation services to people with disabilities and other barriers to employment, such as welfare dependency, homelessness and lack of education or work experience. Also provided are Radio Reading services, vision services and various other social services.

Through its programs Goodwill helps people overcome barriers to employment and become independent, tax-paying members of the community. Goodwill operates eight stores, donation centers, and a used car lot. All proceeds remain with Goodwill and stay in the community.
