Auction A Success Despite Sluggish Economy

Monday, April 13, 2009

The Junior Group of Goodwill Antique and Collectible Auction managed to generate over $53,000 despite the difficult economic climate. Over 500 people attended the Friday evening Auction Preview Party on February 6 at Stambaugh Auditorium. It was the first time in six years that the proceeds were over $50,000. “We were very pleased with the results given the current economy,” says Mike McBride, Goodwill’s executive director. “The Junior Group ladies did a wonderful job and really worked hard to make it such a success.”

The Friday evening gala included a live auction of new items, silent auction, Chinese auction, basket raffle, 50/50 raffle and jewelry sale. The always popular jewelry sale, which features several thousand pieces of pre-priced jewelry generated the largest portion of the proceeds at over $14,000.

The live auction featured items such as airline tickets, limo service, Cavs tickets, a Nanette Lepore coat, Ohio State barstools, a week’s stay at Peek’n  Peak, jewelry, sports tickets and many other items that were donated by various area businesses.

The two-day event, which was presided over by George Roman Auctioneers, also featured an all day antique and collectible auction on Saturday, February 7. Over 260 people attended the Saturday auction to bid on collectible and antique items that were donated through Goodwill’s eight collection centers. The Junior Group volunteers sort through select items that are sent to them from the collection centers and determine whether it should go into the auction.

Items such as musical instruments, glassware, vintage toys, furniture and artwork were just a few of the items up for bid. Ken and Barbie dolls along with their vintage clothing and cases were the big items this year with one set going for $220 and another for $200. The highest bid of the day went to a scenic oil painting on canvas at $225.

The Junior Group was also able to secure two new sponsors for the auction this year. Sponsors were Home Savings, Allied Waste, Aim NationaLease, Hill, Barth & King, Gasser Chair and Akron Children’s Hospital.

The proceeds from the auction are used to help meet Goodwill’s operational and capital needs. These funds come to Goodwill at a critical time due to the weak economy.

Preparations have already begun for next year’s auction. The 2010 auction will be held on Friday, February 5 and Saturday, February 6 at Stambaugh Auditorium.
