Snowed Out Collectible Auction Finally Takes Place

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

The Saturday portion of the Junior Group of Goodwill Antique and Collectible Auction finally took place on Saturday, March 20. The auction was originally scheduled to take place at Stambaugh Auditorium on Saturday, February 6, but the heavy snowfall led to the event being postponed and moved to George Roman’s Western Reserve Auction Center.

Around 200 people attended the event to bid on over 580 items such as vintage toys, instruments, antique furniture, glassware and even a boat. All items auctioned off were selected by Junior Group members from an assortment of donations that are sent up to Goodwill’s main facility from the eight area donation centers in Austintown, Boardman, Calcutta, Hermitage, Liberty, New Castle, Salem and Warren.

Some of the items that garnered high bids were a set of Lionel trains which sold for $160, an Art Deco smoke stand for $100, a vintage nurse outfit for $75, a Roseville vase for $75 and a Martin Trumpet for $300. Despite the change in date and venue, the auction was still a success with proceeds comparable to previous year’s auctions.

Sales from the Saturday auction totaled over $11,000. Combined with the Friday Auction, total proceeds for both events were over $64,000. The money raised from the auction was used for operating and capital needs and was also used to help with the opening of the Austintown store.

Preparations for next year’s auction, including sorting of collectible and antique items, are already underway. To be included on the mailing list for the 2011 auction, please contact Goodwill’s marketing department at 330.759.7921, ext. 207.
