A Good Start Program

The Good Start Program is a two-week soft skills program utilizes evidence-based practices and approaches to create effective and reliable outcomes for addiction and mental health.

The program is structured into three key phases, each designed to meet participants where they are and gradually prepare them for sustainable careers.

Phase 1: Professionalism & Soft Skills Training

Participants complete four job readiness and professionalism courses over two weeks. Led by Career Services Managers and trained facilitators, the sessions are held at recovery partner facilities or Goodwill locations, based on each participant's recovery stage.

Topics include professionalism, conflict resolution, financial literacy, resume building, and interview skills. While unpaid, this phase builds a strong foundation through two-hour sessions, two days a week, preparing participants to succeed in the workplace.

Phase 2: Learn & Earn (On-the-Job Training)

Once participants complete soft skills training, they enter Phase 2, gaining hands-on experience in a retail production environment with the support of a job coach. Participants learn workplace communication, teamwork, and customer service while earning minimum wage for up to 20 hours per week. This paid experience builds confidence, strengthens work ethic, and enhances employability, with schedules tailored to individual needs and treatment plans.

Phase 3: Career Placement & Further Training

Participants are given two pathways to success: securing full-time employment through Goodwill's network of employer partners or transitioning to further training with workforce development partners such as Flying High and the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center (MCCTC). Goodwill's Career Services team supports this process through personalized career planning over 1-2 months, helping participants identify pathways aligned with their skills and goals. Ongoing support continues after placement with monthly check-ins to help participants sustain long-term career growth.
