About The Elephant In The Room Summit
A Bold Summit for Honest Dialogue and Lasting Change
Across the nonprofit, social service, workforce development, philanthropic, and broader community sectors, organizations often share a common mission: improving lives and strengthening communities.
Yet beneath the language of partnership and service lies a difficult reality: good intentions alone do not guarantee meaningful impact, authentic collaboration, or community-centered change.
Hosted by the RISE Community Collaborative at Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries, this summit is grounded in the belief that transforming communities requires more than programs and partnerships. It requires a willingness to examine how power, institutional culture, organizational posture, and systems shape the way we engage with one another and with the communities we serve. At YAGI and RISE, we believe communities are strongest when solutions are built with people, not merely for them, and when collaboration is rooted in humility, shared accountability, and lived experience.
The Elephant in the Room is a bold, solutions-oriented summit designed not only to confront the unspoken dynamics that influence the helping sector, including power imbalances, performative collaboration, institutional self-preservation, and fragmentation, but also to create space to reimagine what more authentic, community-centered systems could become. This conference challenges participants to move beyond transactional partnership models and toward approaches grounded in trust, shared leadership, community voice, and collective responsibility.

Real systems change requires more than awareness.
It requires continued dialogue, learning, and action.
What to Expect
Through keynote addresses, interactive activities, and practical strategy sessions, participants will reflect on how their organizations and systems show up in community work while exploring new possibilities for collaboration, accountability, and transformative systems change. The summit will also serve as the launching pad for the Beyond Good Intentions training series, an ongoing learning and engagement initiative designed to help organizations deepen their understanding of power, culture, collaboration, and authentic community-centered practice beyond the conference itself.
Participants Will Explore:
-
Hidden power dynamics across community systems
-
The gap between good intentions and real outcomes
-
Tokenism vs. authentic community engagement
-
Collaboration, competition, and institutional self-preservation
-
How organizational culture shapes external partnerships
-
Practical strategies for building more accountable, community-centered systems
-
Reimagining and reframing how institutions, communities, and partners work together to create lasting change
Who this Summit is For
This event is for nonprofit leaders, funders, policy makers, public sector professionals, coalition members, and changemakers who are ready to engage in honest reflection, challenge conventional thinking, and help reimagine what community transformation can look like when people, relationships, and shared humanity are truly centered.
Because real change requires more than good intentions — it requires the courage to rethink the systems we have inherited and imagine what is possible together.
